In late May, Google launched the much anticipated update to their Penguin algorithm, dubbed Penguin 2.0. Now that the dust has settled, it's clear the impact has been fairly significant, and that Google has effectively (but certainly not flawlessly) furthered their mission to identify and penalize webspam and black hat SEO practitioners.

Local Search Visibility across all Major Search Platforms!

Ultimately, although it may be frustrating to experience the shifts and changes of the algorithm updates, content creators should be celebrating Penguin 2.0, as it wholly supports the creation of quality, user-friendly sites and content.

Need some tangible reasons to rejoice about the latest updates? Keep reading and prepare to become a Penguin fan.

HowPenguin 2.0 Rewards the Good Guys

"White hat" SEO optimizers are those who are looking to improve the user experience. They work to create valuable content, a seamless user interface, and ultimately strive to manifest the best overall experience in their niche for each visitor. These are precisely the folks Google is looking to reward with Penguin 2.0. What's good for search engines is also good for users, and that means Google will not rest if webspam continues to reach top ranking positions in their search results.

'Master Key' Bug Gives Hackers Access to Any Android Phone Released in Past Four Years

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

A recently-discovered flaw in Android Smartphones leaves the devices helpless against hackers' machinations, according to a security firm. The vulnerability has been kicking around for the past four years so, potentially, any Android phone released during that time period - that is 900 million devices - could be targeted. The vulnerability, discovered by mobile security company Bluebox Labs, enables hackers to not only access data and passwords, but to take over the normal functioning of the device. The hackers are able to gain access by changing an app's APK code without breaking its cryptographic signature…

Facebook Collecting Data for 'Shadow Profiles'

By Megan Abraham (c) 2013

Before last week's Facebook faux pas, chances are you haven't heard of a "shadow profile." But the term is becoming more prevalent as users become more aware that private information may not always be private. As reported on SiteProNews last week, a bug in Facebook's system resulted in the contact information of six millions users being compromised. Users' e-mail addresses and phone numbers were briefly accessible to other Facebook members as a result of the security slip-up, but Facebook vowed that, in most cases, people's personal information didn't make it far and added that there was no evidence to indicate that the bug was used for malicious purposes…

European Union Adds Teeth to Penalties for Cyber-Crime

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

EU lawmakers are cracking down on cyber-criminals with new legislation proposing tougher penalties across the European Union. Under the new rules, hackers will face a minimum of two years in prison for attempting to gain illegal access to information systems, a minimum of three years for using botnets and a minimum of five years for attacking important infrastructure such as power plants or transport or government networks. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström described the new rules as an "important step to boost Europe's defences against cyber-attacks." "The perpetrators of increasingly sophisticated attacks and the producers…

EU to Investigate NSA Surveillance of Europeans

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

The European Union is launching an "in-depth inquiry" into the surveillance of its citizens by the National Security Agency (NSA). The investigation by a committee of the EU Parliament will examine the bugging of EU premises and "other spying allegations," according to a press release. During Thursday's vote calling on the U.S. to end surveillance programs that "violate the fundamental right of EU citizens to privacy and data protection," and Europe's "sovereignty and jurisdiction," 483 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) voted in favor of the probe. Ninety-eight voted against the motion and 65 members abstained. A Civil Liberties Committee will conduct the inquiry…

Apple Planning New Programs to Entice Shoppers: Report

By SPN Staff Writers (c) 2013

Apple is reportedly planning ways to entice consumers into its stores to purchase iPhones. Apple CEO Tim Cook, during a recent discussion with the firm's retail chiefs, talked about some new measures, such as increasing price-matching and trade-in options, 9to5Mac reports, citing "multiple" sources. The trade-in program would enable iPhone owners to receive a discount on a new iPhone if they turn in their old device. The initiative may also allow customers to upgrade a damaged, older iPhone to a refurbished iPhone 5. The report said price-matching programs for international stores may also be included in the proposal. According to the report, Apple's new consumer…

Penn State Develops Fingerprint Identification Software

By Megan Abraham (c) 2013

Even 20/20 vision isn't perfect when it comes to evaluating fingerprints, so Penn State Researchers have developed a fool-proof way to consistently analyzing prints. "Fingerprints usually undergo environmental weathering and smudging. The condition of a fingerprint affects how reliable a match can be between a collected print and prints on record. Knowing a fingerprint's dependability can minimize the chance of a wrongful or delayed conviction," according to a Penn State press-release. Researchers have created a process in which three different computer programs are utilized to properly identify the person behind the print. What's accomplished is evaluation of a…
