Every other year Moz performs a study to discover what makes a page or site rank high on Google. They surveyed dozens of SEO professionals, and the results are enlightening for any business, especially those trying to optimize their websites for search engines. Moz surveyed 120 SEOs and asked them to rate different factors. The factors were given value based on their importance to Google's ranking algorithm. Most of the factors that were ranked high had scores of 7 or 8; the less important factors seemed to have scores of 4 or 5. |

Art and Effectively Communicating Impenetrable SEOBy John Sylvester (c) 2013 I spent a very pleasant afternoon being shown around a client's new art gallery. His website is not performing well and wanted an SEO report as to why. So I duly wrote it later in the day. Although it was written in very simple language, he phoned the following afternoon and told me he didn't understand a single word of it. When I started to analyze the site, I realized that although the client has hosting, the code was in a frameset and the content was being pulled from GoDaddy's temporary server. Worse, some of the linkbacks to the site should have come from major media companies like CNN and the New York Times, but instead are being directed to a… | Nokia Launches Lumia 625By Megan Abraham (c) 2013 Nokia's newest Smartphone aims to please consumers on a budget. The Nokia Lumia 625 is being marketed by the company as "an accessibly priced 4G" phone that combines value with quality. "With our largest smartphone screen to date, the Nokia Lumia 625 is a perfect example of how Nokia is delivering leading smartphone innovation and experiences at every price point," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Nokia Smart Devices. The Lumia 625 features Nokia's biggest display - 4.7-inches - along with LTE 4G connectivity, but the phone's mediocre hardware ultimately says a lot about its lowered price point of about $290 U.S. Although it runs the latest version of Windows 8, it's supported by a 1.2 GHz…

Flipboard Comes to the DesktopBy Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013 Flipboard is making its way to desktops and laptops after three years as an app for tablets and, more recently, Smartphones. Beginning today, anyone can read magazines created on Flipboard from their Web browsers. "Millions of magazines have been curated by Flipboard readers, covering just about every topic imaginable, and now, for the first time, when people share those magazines, others will be able to enjoy them right from their desktop computer," reads a Flipboard blog post. "The Web magazines were uniquely designed for desktop browsing, all with Flipboard's signature look and feel. Each magazine has an expansive, full-bleed cover, and pages can be 'flipped' from left and right, just like on mobile devices. Curators can continue to add content to… | Google Drives 25 Percent of North American Internet UseBy Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013 Google truly is king of the Internet boasting 25 percent off all North American online traffic - a new Web record. In fact, Google has become so prevalent in the online world, 62 percent of all end users and their devices exchange traffic with Gmail, Google search, YouTube and Google Maps during the course of an average day, according to analytics firm Deepfield. Deepfield's said Google would control an even larger share had it analyzed only computers, Smartphones and tablets. However, the company also took into account game consoles, home media appliances, and other embedded devices. "While it is old news that Google is BIG , the sheer scale and dominance of Google in the Internet…

Electronic Skin Created to Respond to TouchBy SPN Staff Writers (c) 2013 Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley are hard at work to make robots touch sensitive. To accomplish just that, the scientists have created a paper-thin electronic skin - also known as e-skin - that lights up when touched. The more forceful the pressure, the brighter the light shines. The invention of the research team - led by Ali Javey, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences - is the first user-interactive sensor network on flexible plastic. The e-skin, described in a paper published online in the journal Nature Materials, comes in at 16-by-16 pixels. Inside each… | Satellite Internet Evolves to Give More OptionsBy Jamie Staker (c) 2013 In rural and remote areas of the country, high speed Internet options like cable and DSL may not be available. Thus, people resort to satellite Internet, which is now available in many rural areas in the United States. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) estimates that 19 million Americans live in locations where there is no way to get any type of wired broadband Internet connection. According to an early 2013 news report by Ars Technica, satellite vendors HughesNet and ViaSat now offer 10-15 Mbps download speeds and 1-3 Mbps upload speeds to almost any location in the United States… |
