Many people have been talking about the new updates to Pinterest - the new mobile "Pin It" button that has been incorporated into ten apps so far, including apps by Etsy, ModCloth, and TED, and Rich Pins that provide more actionable information about products, recipes, and movies.

Strategic Advertising Solutions for Your Products/Services!

These updates are going to revolutionize the way people use Pinterest by giving them more motivation to act on pins and giving them an excuse to spend longer on the site. There have even been hints that these changes will give rise to a new way for Pinterest to monetize their social creation, creating a channel for paid advertising. But as a business owner, you're probably wondering how you can actually act on these changes and use them to promote your business. If you're serious about your Pinterest strategy, read on!

Introduction to Rich Pins
Pinterest debuted Rich Pins on their blog on May 20. There are three types, for each of which they unveiled a new example board: product pins, recipe pins, and movie pins. Each type loads up pins with extra information. Recipe pins present pinners with an assortment of ingredients and directions, movie pins show cast members and ratings, and product pins, which are probably the most relevant to your business, give pricing, availability, and tell where to purchase - information that is updated on a daily basis. Rich Pins stand out from regular pins because of icons that appear below the image.

Court Sides With FBI over Google on Warrentless Info Requests

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

Google has lost its bid to protect user information from the FBI after a U.S. District judge ruled the technology firm must comply with the Bureau's national security letters. Google had been arguing before U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco that it should not have to comply with the 19 national security letters (NSLs) it had recently been given because they seek to gain user information without a warrant. According to CNet, Illston ruled in the FBI's favor for all but two of the 19 NSLs after receiving classified affidavits from an FBI assistant director and another high ranking FBI official. She requested the…

LinkedIn Update Lets Images Tell Users' Stories

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

LinkedIn is continuing to up its game in a bid to battle with mammoth social networks Facebook and Twitter. Members of the social media site for professionals can now directly upload images, documents, and presentations to the updates they share from the LinkedIn Homepage. The update comes on the heels of another recent update which allows users to add "rich media" to their profiles to "visually showcase" their professional history and accomplishments. "Whether it's a thought provoking presentation about the future of big data or it's a picture of an inspirational quote, or perhaps it's an infographic showing the top trends…

Twitter Update Allows Lengthy Lists

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

Twitter users can now make lists to their heart's content on the social network. A recent update gives users the ability to create up to 1,000 lists on Twitter, a considerable leap from the previous limit of 20, Twitter announced in a tweet. Those lists can now include 5,000 accounts, up from 500. Twitter launched its lists feature - which allows members to curate groups of Twitter users - in 2009. The feature allows users to organize followers and keep track of people they follow. Members also can create their own lists or subscribe to lists created by other Twitter users. Lists are used only for reading tweets, not to send or direct Tweets to people. Lists are public by default, but can be made private.…

Self-Driving Cars Get Government Nod for On-Road Testing

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

The U.S. government is ready for self-driving cars to hit the road, but only for testing. The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has released its new policy on automated vehicles, is urging individual states to use caution when allowing the computerized cars to be tested on roadways. Google and some U.S. automakers, in a bid to make roadways safer, are developing self-driving cars -also known as autonomous vehicles. The computerized vehicles would eliminate human error which, creators say, would prevent a lot of collisions. There are worries…

Web Page Review: Best Move Forward.com

By Karon Thackston (c) 2013

About once a month, my team of experts and I get together and thoroughly pick apart a Web page from one of my Marketing Words Newsletter subscribers - with the site owner's permission (and blessing), of course. The goal is to give extensive ways to improve rankings and conversions. During the process, you can also look over our shoulders at techniques that may help bolster the performance of your site, too. This month's candidate is Jean of Best Move Forward.com. As a reminder, the expert panel does not discuss the page we are critiquing. Each of us looks over the page and points out the good and bad we see. Then we give suggestions…

Tumblr Brings Sponsored Posts to Dashboard

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

Just a week-and-a-half after being acquired by Yahoo, Tumblr has announced in-stream advertising will begin to appear on users' Dashboards. "Today, we'll start to bring sponsored posts to your Dashboard on the Web. Just like in our mobile apps, these posts will simply blend in with the posts from the blogs you follow," the company said in a blog post. The move is not a big surprise - Tumblr began to include advertising on its mobile apps in April, more than a month before being snapped up by Yahoo. Much like the mobile sponsored posts, the ads on Tumblr's Dashboard can be identified by a dollar sign icon. The sponsored posts will be similar to the advertisements that appear on…
