Getting the Most Out of Google Analytics
Although there are many, many tools that help us analyze and interpret a site's metrics, most of us use Google Analytics on at least a top-level basis. The following tips will help you make the most of this comprehensive program, since it's the most popular one available, and features loads of excellent tools.

1) Integrate Google Analytics properly with your site. This is the biggest mistake most companies make, as many integrations are only pulling in basic data. How to Pitch a Guest Post

By Micha Boettiger (c) 2013

Pitching a guest post is tricky business, and learning how to grab the attention of your target site is one of the most important skills an SEO writer can learn. So what makes good outreach? How can we get someone who gets hundreds of e-mails every day to read through and respond to our e-mail above anyone else's? Don't Talk Too Much Webmasters that accept guest posts have to look through hundreds of requests every week. That means that if they even bother to click through all of their e-mails they still won't look at one for more than a few seconds. They have better things to do with their day than to read about how unique your content is and that for the low, low price of a backlink you'll write them some…

New PayPal Initiative Out of This World

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

If you ever decide to take a holiday in outer space, PayPal will have you covered. The online payment service launched its PayPal Galactic initiative today now that universal travel is increasingly becoming an option as more space tourism programs - such as Virgin Galactic and Space X - crop up. "The time has now come for us to start planning for the future; a future where we aren't just talking about global payments," PayPal president David Marcus said in a blog post. "Today, we are expanding our vision off Earth into space." As space tourism grows, travelers will need a way to pay bills and make purchases, Marcus said. "Already the need for a payment system off Earth exists. Astronauts inhabiting space stations today…

Microsoft Pushes Top-Secret Court to Revoke Gag Order

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

Google is not alone in asking the U.S.'s top-secret court to lift the gag order on data requests made by the National Security Agency, FBI and other federal agencies. Microsoft is also pressing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) for permission to go public with the total numbers of requests the company receives that are okayed by the court as well as the number of user accounts affected by those requests. Microsoft, in a nine-page court filing published on Scribd Wednesday, says the limitations placed upon it by the American government violate the First Amendment and "constitute a content-based restriction on speech that fails to satisfy strict…

'Dirty Old Man' Tells Yahoo CEO How 'Attractive' She Is

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

A YouTube video of a self-professed "dirty old man" telling Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer he finds her "attractive" is making the rounds and raising a few eyebrows. During a Yahoo shareholders meeting earlier in the week, an investor named George Polis used his time with the microphone to win over the 38-year-old Mayer with an awkward compliment. Whether he was trying to be funny or charming, no one knows for sure, but it is likely Mayer was more annoyed and embarrassed than captivated by his wit. "This is my personal opinion," he said. "First is, I'm George Polis. I have 2,000 shares of Yahoo. I'm Greek and I'm a dirty old man and you look attractive, Marissa."…

The Continued Mediocrity of Google+

A SPN Exclusive Article by Tina Courtney-Brown (c) 2013

Follow SiteProNews on:     Follow SPN on Facebook    Follow SPN on Twitter    Follow SPN on YouTube    Grab the SPN RSS Feed

Google may be the mother of all search engines, but when it comes to social skills, the company is still sorely lacking. If success in the social network stratosphere is measured by page views, time spent, and overall activity, Google+ can't hold a candle to Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest.

But while traditional metrics may not currently be kind to Google's two-year-old social offering, there just might be a silver lining.

Strategic Advertising Solutions for Your Products/Services!

With over 500 million profiles, there's no shortage of sign-ups and data; just frequency and overall time spent. Smart businesses, however, see Google+ not as a social mecca, but a SEO must-have. Since data on the social network is directly tied into Google's uber-popular search engine, there's plenty of big reasons every business should have at least a modest presence. But what will the future bring for Google+? Will it turn Facebook into the next MySpace, or will the SEO boon be its only true touted success?

The Cracks in the Armor
While it's fair to say the Google+ rollout has been slow and steady, two years is a long time to operate a massive social network without seeing any substantial successes. Signs that things are not as rosy as they could be lie in the staleness of content across the network. A look through the Google+ pages for major US brands shows a veritable graveyard of content. As an example, this last Cinco de Mayo, pizza giant Dominos launched a full scale marketing event on its Facebook page, complete with guacamole-themed pizza. A quick peek at their Google+ page showed content that hadn't been updated since October of 2012. You could almost hear the crickets chirping.

Be Mindful of the Law When Blogging for Business

By Jennifer M. Schank (c) 2013

More and more businesses today are discovering the benefits of blogging. Blogs can help position businesses and professionals as industry leaders, build relationships with clients and customers, provide a major boost to search engine rankings and attract new, quality traffic to websites. In many ways, blogging has turned average people into citizen journalists, disbursing story-telling channels beyond traditional media and delivering them directly into the hands of the masses. Therein lies the risk. Many companies today - and the writers who blog…

Court Advisor Sides With Google in 'Right to be Forgotten' Case

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

Google is under no requirement to delete sensitive information from its search index, an advisor to the European Union's highest court says in a written opinion released today. While search engines such as Google are expected to follow EU privacy laws, national data protection authorities cannot expect them to be responsible for the content published by various websites - rather it is the sites themselves that must be answerable for the content they publish, says Advocate General Niilo Jaaskinen. The Data Protection Directive…

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

The sources said Ballmer is working with "a small consortium of his direct reports" and some members of the board. With so many senior executives left out of the loop, many are nervous - both about the plans for the company and about job security…
