Search engine optimization, otherwise known as SEO, has been bandied about since the inception of the internet as if it were the holy grail of online success. But what is SEO really? More importantly, what has it become? Is it simply a matter of optimizing your website? Or, has it grown to include a number of other parameters? My answer to these questions may surprise you. SEO is no longer just one thing. It has grown to mean so much more.

Make Billing Painless in 2013 with FreshBooks

In this article I will discuss how search engine optimization has evolved in order to become Search Engine Marketing (aka S.E.M.). I will also provide you with information that will show you how you can improve your search ranking. This includes techniques designed to insure a strong ranking position. Best of all, you can accomplish all this without resorting to tricks, gimmicks or deception that attempts to hoodwink the search engine spiders.

Stop Acting Like it's 1999
Before the turn of the century, achieving search ranking was relatively simple. You selected a keyword relevant to your business, created a website and added the desired keywords to your content. You made sure you included the keywords in Meta and Alt tags. Then you posted your web pages to the top 100 search engines and directories. Voila! If you chose your keywords carefully, you soon showed up on page one of Yahoo, AltaVista, Net Taxi and other search engines.

Hiring Virtual: Why Old Fashioned HR Doesn't Work in the Digital World

By Greg Moran (c) 2013

In 2009, Forrester released a research report stating that (much to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's chagrin), "telecommuting will rise to include 43 percent of U.S. workers by 2016." This trend is not going away. Beyond encouraging positive brand recognition and a more efficient process, organizations can elevate their hiring process to find top performers for both in-house and telecommuting positions by forgoing the traditional, and often lackadaisical, talent selection process altogether. A recent article in the New York Times entitled, Online Hiring Tools Are Changing Recruiting Techniques, outlines how many companies are taking a different, and more…

Search Ranking Solutions for Disgruntled Website Owners

By Marilyn Bontempo (c) 2013

Regardless of what the "experts" say, the obsession for top organic rankings in search results continues to proliferate among every client I represent. Most people are incensed at their loss of top placement whether their websites were tainted by "black hat" practices or not. Most of those with the biggest drop in SERPS claim innocence in that regard but in working with them and examining their Google Webmaster Tools' and Analytics' accounts, I have reason to believe otherwise. Of course, most of my clients are too busy with their own jobs to have tinkered themselves with anything that may have affected their placements. Instead, they hired outside contractors who promised…

Publishers Go To Bat for Apple Against DoJ in eBook Case

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

The five major publishers accused of conspiring with Apple to raise the retail prices of eBooks are objecting to the constraints the Department of Justice is seeking to have implemented against the iPhone maker. Hachette Book Inc., HarperCollins Publishers L.L.C., Penguin (USA) Inc., Simon & Schuster Inc. and Macmillan Publishers, in a recently published court filing courtesy of IDG News, are opposing "the injunctive relief sought against Apple" after the firm was found guilty of violating anti-trust laws. The DoJ, along with 33 State Attorneys General, submitted a proposal last week asking the court to require Apple to end its existing deals with the five publishers. The proposal also asked the court to…

Instagram 4.1 Enables Archived Video Imports

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

Video-sharing site Instagram is now allowing its users to share blasts from the past by uploading old clips from their Smartphone media libraries. The new feature is part of Instagram 4.1, an update that also includes automatic straightening for iOS and video on Instagram for Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). "Starting today you can upload videos from your phone's media library and share those moments to Instagram regardless of when they were captured," reads an Instagram blog post. "Once you select the video clip you'd like to import, you can trim it down to the exact part you like best. We've also made it so that you can choose how you square-crop your clip so you can keep the action front and center."…

Yahoo Facing the Future With Fresh Logo

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

Yahoo has kicked off a '30 days of change' campaign to celebrate Yahoo's future while remembering its past. At the end of the 30 days - on Sept. 4 - the technology company will introduce a new logo, one that befits a "rapidly evolving" company, according to a company blog. "Over the past year, there's been a renewed sense of purpose and progress at Yahoo, and we want everything we do to reflect this spirit of innovation," wrote chief marketing officer Kathy Savitt in a blog post. "The new logo will be a modern redesign that's more reflective of our re-imagined design and new experiences." Every day for the next 30 days, Yahoo will display a variation of its logo on its homepage and throughout its network in the U.S.…

Apple Wins Appeal to Pursue Motorola for Patent Violations

By Jennifer Cowan (c) 2013

An appeals court has reinstated Apple's patent complaint against Google-owned Motorola Mobility, granting the iPhone maker a second chance to, potentially, have some of the Google-owned company's devices banned for sale in the U.S. The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, in a ruling made public Wednesday, reversed two U.S. International Trade Commission findings, allowing Apple to pursue Motorola for at least one alleged multi-touch patent breach. The appeals court has directed the ITC to discover if Motorola breached one patent and review if a portion of the second patent is…
